Our existence is dependent of each other.
There is nothing that we do individually that does not affect those around us in one way or another. I remember 10 years ago when I lost my feet, even though I was the one who was directly impacted, many people around me were also impacted. They had to adjust their daily activities to accommodate what I had become. My friends had to adjust to the fact that their friend “me” needs more help particularly on early days of amputation.
Successful societies is as a result of collective contributions of each member. Let’s take driving for instance, there are no police officers who are out their making sure that each person drives responsibly but, most of us do it even when we are not being watched because we understand how unpleasant it can be if each one of us decide to subscribe to their own traffic rules. However, it’s not always true that we think of how what we do could affect or influence other people. Through conformity, sometimes we do things that could cause harm to the society.
Our selective convenience makes assume that whatever we do is none of someone’s else business. Our individual acts spills over often and pose unintended consequences to others. Is this to say as an individual you always have to think about others first before yourself? Obviously not, but as you plan to do whatever you intend to do, let it be something that if it spills to the general public, it will have a common good.
